Those of us who are parents have probably answered the call of a child in the middle of the night who is afraid of the dark. They call for Mom and Dad to come turn on the light and drive away whatever monsters they imagine might be lurking in the darkness. They know there is comfort and safety in the arms of their parents.
Christ tells us that we should become as little children (Matt. 18:3). As children of God, we should be afraid of the dark. There truly are monsters that lurk in spiritual darkness.
The rulers of darkness are very real and they fight against us (Eph. 6:12).
Satan rules the darkness and it is his dwelling place (Rev. 2:13).
Satan is called:
* Devil (Matt. 4:1)
* A roaring lion (1 Pet. 5:8)
* Serpent (Gen. 3:1)
* The wicked one (Matt. 13:19)
* Dragon (Rev. 12:9).
Satan is the tempter (Matt. 4:3) and he strives to keep us in the darkness with him (Matt. 13:19).
David called God his light and salvation (Psalm 27:1).
As a child who is afraid of the dark, calls upon his earthly parents to turn on the light, we can call upon our Heavenly Father for light and safety.
“God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5).
We must turn from darkness to light by turning from Satan to God (Acts 26:18). We must call for our Heavenly Father (Rom. 10:13) through obedience to His will (Acts 22:16). We remain under the protection of the blood of Christ “If we walk in the light as he is in the light” (1 John 1:7).
When we do this, God will give us light and drive away the darkness with its monsters (Psalm 36:9); (Rev. 22:5).
Are you afraid of the dark?
You should be!
