Paul's reply:
Great points, Emma, and good question! Looking up the words Satan and Devil we find that Satan means adversary and devil means slanderer or accuser. Strong's dictionary says Satan refers to an opponent or one who withstands. Job chapter One provides interesting insights into the character of Satan. Strong's also has devil as a false accuser & slanderer. Wherever we see the word "devil" used - we see "the devil". It is interesting to notice that the word "devil" does not appear in the Old Testament, but the person of Satan appears in both Old and New.
Your
conclusions regarding the tree of life are also supported by Gen 3:22-24
"And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and
now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
23 Therefore the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.
24 So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden
Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."
They lost eternal life in two respects:
1. Physically they began to die when they sinned and lost access to the tree of life.
2. Spiritually they died the moment they sinned.
The word death implies a "separation."
Physical death occurs when the soul leaves (is separated from) the body.
Spiritual death occurs when the soul is separated from God in eternity. We will all experience the former; but only those who are in Christ at the judgment will avoid the latter. Therefore we must be faithful unto death (Rev. 2:10b)
