We
often find ourselves making foolish choices that we know are not for the
best. As a consequence, we end up in situations that
cause us much needless pain. What becomes
frustrating is the knowledge that we knew better, and yet we still chose the
wrong path!
The
book of Proverbs is full of advice on what to do when we find ourselves
paying the consequence for our wrong choices (i.e. Proverbs
6:1-5, Proverbs
6:30f, , Proverbs
30:32f).
Yet
at the very beginning of the book of Proverbs, we are given advice on how to
keep ourselves from having to face the consequences of bad
choices.
“When
wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee.” (Proverbs
2:10f)
Wisdom
and true knowledge are rooted in respect for God and His commands;
“The
fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and
instruction.’ (Proverbs 1:7)
The
fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy
is understanding. (Proverbs 9:10)
Solomon
writes that when we have the foundation of wisdom and knowledge, it will be
manifest in discretion. But none of this will come by
accident. We must work at laying a foundation through a
study of God’s Word. We must also work at applying the knowledge that we
have gained.
“Study
to shew thyself approved unto God, a
workman that needeth not to be ashamed,
rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2Timothy 2:15)
If
we have a proper understanding of what God wants from
us and if we are willing to carry out his commands, we will be spared
much unnecessary trouble. That, of course, will be
worth much more than a “pound of cure”.
“Get
wisdom...Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she
shall keep thee.” (Proverbs 4:5f)
