WORD STUDY: REDEEM/REDEMPTION
1. What is the definition of redeem or redemption?
2. What is the Hebrew word for redeem. What two events was it
usually associated with?
MY STORY:
Glen and I were so overjoyed at having a son, but we still had a
few details to arrange before the adoption became final. We had to pay for the
medical bills, court costs, and adoption services in order to make Anderson our
own. We were told of these costs from the very beginning and were prepared to
pay them when that opportunity arose. Once these fees were paid, we could bring
Anderson home as our adopted son!!
Eighteen months after our adoption, I found out that I was
expecting. I guess doctors don’t always know what God has in store for us!!
Emma Leigh came into our lives two short years after Anderson. We truly love
both of them so very much. I can truly testify that my heart does not favor one
child over the other. They are both my precious blessings and I love them with
all my being!
GOD’S STORY
Just as we had to pay a minimal price for our son, God had to pay a
tremendous price to make us His very own. It is this price that we will
concentrate on this week.
We are all sinners. This sin separates us from the fellowship of
God our Father. For we cannot serve two masters. If we are not in God we are of
Satan.
1. For __________ have __________ and fall short of the glory of
God. Romans 3:23
2. If we say that we have no __________, we deceive ourselves, and
the __________ is not in us. I John 1:8
3. No one can __________ two masters; for either he will hate the
one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the
other. You cannot serve God and __________. Matthew 6:24
4. And you He made alive, who were __________ in trespasses and
sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this __________,
according to the __________ of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in
the sons of __________, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the
lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the __________ of the flesh and of the mind, and
were by nature children of __________, just as the others. Ephesians 2:1- 3
5. Whoever commits __________ also commits __________, and sin is
lawlessness. I John 3:4
6. He who __________ is of the __________, for the devil has sinned
from the beginning. I John 3:8
7. The coming of the lawless one is according to the work of
__________, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, and with all unrighteous
deception among those who __________, because they did not receive the love of
the truth, that they might be saved. II Thessalonians 2:9-10
8. Read the following passages which describe eternity for those
who are lost in sin:
Matthew 13:18-23; 13:36-43
Matthew 13:47-50
II Peter 3:10-13
Luke 16:19-31
It is from this destruction that Jesus was sent to redeem us!
9. For God so __________ the world that He gave His only begotten
__________, that whoever believes in Him should not __________ but have
___________ life. For God did not send His Son into the world to __________ the
world, but that the world through Him might be __________. John 3:16-17
God gave His perfect and holy son so that we as sinners could be
His children. That is such an overwhelming thought to me!
10. Looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our
great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who __________ Himself for us, that He might
__________ us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special
people, zealous for good works. Titus 2:13-14
If we were to study the Old Covenant, we would learn of all the
many blood sacrifices that were made by the High Priests. (You may choose to
spend some time in Leviticus learning of these sacrifices, but for the lack of
time in our study, we will remain in the New Testament) These Old Testament
sacrifices had to be made over and over again. They were not sufficient. We have
been given the perfect sacrifice by Jesus Christ!
11. Read Hebrews 9. In your own words compare the High Priest with
Jesus as our High Priest today.
12. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us
into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have __________ through His
__________, the forgiveness of sins. Colossians 1:13-14
13. Knowing that you were not __________ with corruptible things,
like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your
fathers, but with the __________ __________ of Christ, as of a lamb without
blemish and without spot. I Peter 1:18-19
14. As we think of this blood sacrifice, I think it only fitting to
spend some time this week studying the last hours of Christ’s life and the
sacrifice He gave for you and I. Please spend time reading Matthew 26:17-28:10;
Mark 14:1-16:20; Luke 22:1-24:53; John 18:1-20:18
Could you have endured the physical pain of beatings, thorns, and
nails? What about the emotional pain of being deserted by your friends and
mocked by the crowed? Could you have endured the pain of separation from your
God and Father? In doing this lesson I keep thinking of the song that says: “I
owed a debt I could not pay, He paid a debt He did not owe.”
15. Read Ephesians 1:3-14.
When did he choose us?
Notice we were predestined to adoption as sons
by Jesus Christ, according to the good __________ of His will.
We have redemption through what?
In Him we have obtained an __________.
One year after Anderson entered our home, we had to appear before a
judge. This Judge questioned our intents to be parents and made sure we
understood the responsibilities of parenthood. He then signed our paperwork and
finalized the adoption. At this time we were granted a new birth certificate
with Glen and I as his parents. The adoption was sealed and final!
Just as Anderson’s adoption was sealed by the Judge, our adoption is sealed by
the Holy Spirit.
16. In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the
gospel of you salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were __________ with
the __________ __________ of promise, who is the __________ of our inheritance
until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Ephesians 1:13-14
17. And do not grieve the __________ __________ of God, by whom you
were __________ for the day of ___________. Ephesians 4:30
LESSON IN ACTION:
I want to leave you with Christ’s last words to His disciples as
He prepared to ascend unto Heaven:
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel
to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved: but he who
does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:15-16
