WORD STUDY: ADOPTION
You will need a Strong’s Concordance for this assignment.
1. How many times can you find the word adoption in the Old
Testament?
2. List each of the passages in the New Testament where the word
adoption is used.
3. Give the Greek word for adoption and write a definition for the
word.
MY STORY:
I want to share with you the wonderful blessing that came into our
home. We had the opportunity to adopt our son. He was placed in our home with
much love and care although he did not naturally belong there. I had not
conceived him, nor given birth to him, but he was still my very own. I used to
have a poem in his room that stated:
Not
bone of my bone,
nor
flesh of my flesh,
but
still very much my own.
Don’t
forget for one minute
you
didn’t grow under my heart but in it!
What did my son have to do in order to become my adopted child? He
had to be born. I could not adopt a child that had not been physically born. In
the same manner, we cannot become children of God until we are born a second
time. Let’s take a look at the story of Nicodemus.
GOD’S STORY:
1. Read John 3:1-21
2. Who was Nicodemus?
3. When did Nicodemus seek Jesus?
4. “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is _______________
_______________, he _______________ see the kingdom of God. John
3:3
5. Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is _______________ of
_______________ and the _______________, he _______________ enter
the kingdom of God. John 3:5
Notice Nicodemus’ response in verse 9. He asks, “How can these
things be?” Many times we ask the same questions, failing to open our hearts
and minds to the teachings of God our Father. Read Jesus’ response in John
3:10-21.
6. Most assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify
what We have seen, and you do __________ _______________ Our witness. John 3:11
7. Notice that the words We and Our are capitalized in this verse.
To whom is this referring?
8. And as _______________ lifted up the _______________ in the
wilderness, even so must the _______________ of ______________ be
_______________ up. John 3:14
9. Read the story of Moses raising the serpent in Numbers 21:4-9
10. Who was compared to the serpent of Moses?
11. For God so _______________ the world that He gave His
_______________ begotten _______________ , that whoever
_______________ in Him should ______________ _______________, but
have ____________________ life. John 3:16
12. Read of Jesus death, burial, and resurrection in John 18 - 20.
13. In John 3:18-21 Jesus compares those who love darkness with
those who love the light. Write this comparison in your own words.
The sad ending to this story is that we are not told whether
Nicodemus believed and was born again or whether He walked away lost. My prayer
is that everyone of you taking this course will receive the Word of God and obey
Him.
14. If you _______________ Me, _______________ My commandments.
John 14:15
God set up a condition (commandment) that was to be followed in
order to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. What did Jesus mean when He said we must
be born again of water and of the Spirit? Let’s study deeper into
God’s word!
15. Read Acts 2:22-47
16. Now when the people _______________ this they were
______________ to the heart. Acts 2:37
17. Then Peter said to them, “_______________, and let every one
of you be
_______________ in the name of _______________ _______________
for the _______________ of _______________; and you shall
_______________ the gift of the _______________ _______________.
For the promise is to _______________ and to your _______________,
and
to _______________ who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God
will
call. Acts 2:38-39
18. Then those who _______________ received his word were
_______________; and that day about _______________
_______________ souls were added to them. Acts 2:41
19. Also read and write a summary of the conversions of:
Ethiopian Eunuch (Acts 8:26 - 40)
Saul/Paul (Acts 9:1-22)
Cornelius (Acts 10)
Phillipian Jailer (Acts 16:25-34)
20. Even though Jesus was the perfect man, He set His example for
us to
follow. Read Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22;
and John 1:29-34.
21. Ladies what must we do to become God’s Adopted Daughters?
It is at this point that we receive the blessed adoption to be
God’s child. (Galatians 3:26-4:7) It is this wonderful blessing that we will
be looking at in more detail throughout the rest of this study.
LESSON IN ACTION!
22. Tell me about your “adoption” story. How did you become a
child of God? Who influenced you? How old were you? Why did you feel the
necessity of baptism?
If you have not made this decision yet, study the baptisms recorded
in Acts (question # 19) and journal your thoughts for me. Feel free to ask any
questions. I would love to study with you further.
