WORD STUDY: SUPPLY/PROVIDE

1. Write the definition for supply.

2. Read Psalms 23. Using this passage write an essay stating how our Heavenly Father/Shepherd provides for us. You are welcome to use supporting verses of scripture.

MY STORY:

As I shared in lesson 9, I was adopted with my twin sister. Any of you who have raised children realize how expensive one child can be. Now imagine buying for two!! My parents share stories of going grocery shopping with two carts. One would be filled with baby food and formula and the second would be filled with diapers and all other baby supplies! My parents never failed to supply me with all my immediate needs.
Because my parents loved us so much, they also worked hard and did without many things in order to give us extra things on our WANT list not our needs list. One story stands out so extra special in my mind. When I was in fifth grade the local 4-H club was hosting a Bike Day. The children were encouraged to bring their bikes and compete in different obstacles around the parking lot. The child with the highest scores would win prizes. Amie and I really wanted to go, but we didn’t have a bicycle. It is something we had begged for over and over again. On that Saturday afternoon dad came home from work and asked us to help him unload some things from the back of his truck. When we looked in the back of the truck there were two brand new green John Deere 5-speed bikes!! We were so excited. We all loaded up and went to the 4-H Bike Day. I know my dad had to sacrifice something to purchase those bikes for us. Over the years I probably put 1,000 miles on my bike. I would ride to my friend’s house, the library, to babysitting jobs, and just pleasant places to escape as a teenager! I still have my precious green bike tucked away in the shed. Every once in a while, I still pull it out and ride it down the road.

GOD’S STORY:
3. "Or what _______________ is there among you who, if his _______________ asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being _______________ , know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your _______________ who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!" Matthew 7:9-11

Remember how much God loves His children! He wants to provide for all our needs. We are going to study a few Old Testament stories to see how God provided for them and then we will look at scriptures from the New Testament to see how God provides for us today and what our responsibilities should be as recipients of these provisions.

4. Let’s begin by studying the beginning of time. Turn to Genesis 1 and list the 7 days of creation.

Consider each day of creation. God supplied all our needs before He created us! We needed dry land, oxygen, plants for food, etc. Isn’t our God an awesome God?! Read into the story of creation just a little further.

5. "And the ______________ _______________ said, “ It is not good that man should be _______________; I will make him a ________________ comparable to him.”"Genesis 2:18

6. "And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on ________________, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a _______________, and He brought her to the man." Genesis 2:21-22

7. Remember when Adam and Eve realized that they were naked? They sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves (Genesis 3:7). Even though God was angered by their disobedience, He still loved them and cared about their needs.
"Also for Adam and his wife the _______________ _______________ made _______________ of skin, and _______________ them."
Genesis 3:21

Let’s move forward to the time of Moses and the children of Israel. In Exodus 1 we read of the new Pharaoh in Egypt. He is uncomfortable with the number of Hebrews living in his country. He decides that they must be reduced in number lest they rise up against him in war. His first decree is to the midwives Shiphrah and Puah.

8. "And he said when you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a _______________, then you shall _______________ him; but if it is a _______________, then she shall live." Exodus 1:16

However, the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded. God took notice upon these midwives.
9. "Therefore God dealt well with the _______________, and the people multiplied and grew very _______________. And so it was, because the midwives _______________ God, that He _______________ households for them." Exodus 1:20-21

10. Read Exodus 2:1-10. Paraphrase the provisions God made for Moses at this time in his life.

When Moses was weaned, he was given to the princess to raise as her own son. Moses was taught the ways of the Egyptian people, he knew the Pharaoh and all his household. Moses was seen murdering an Egyptian soldier and fled for fear of his life into the land of Midian. There he married Zipporah and had two sons. While tending sheep, he sees the burning bush. God speaks through the burning bush and commissions Moses to return to Egypt and set His people free from bondage. However, Moses makes excuse after excuse why he is not the right choice (Exodus 3-4) Let’s look at his last excuse and how God once again provided for Moses.

11."Then Moses said to the LORD, “ O my Lord, I am not _______________, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant; but I am _______________ of _____________ and _______________ of _______________.” Exodus 4:10

12. “So the LORD said to him, “Who has made man’s _______________? Or who makes the _______________, the deaf, the seeing, or the blind? Have not I, the LORD? Now therefore, go, and I will be with your _______________ and teach you what you shall say.” Exodus 4:11

Moses still rejected this idea and kindled the anger of God. Please note that God also provides us with our talents (I Peter 4:11). Make sure you are not arguing with God like Moses did!!

13. Read Exodus 4:13-17. Who did God send to aid Moses? Notice, he was already on his way to meet Moses. God provides for us before we even know there is a need!!

14. Over and over again we are told of God’s provision for His children when they leave Egypt. Read the following passages (not a conclusive list) and tell what was provided in each one.
Exodus 14:

Exodus 15:22-27

Exodus 16:1-16

Exodus 17:8-15

Exodus 20

15. “Your _______________ did not _______________ _______________ on you, nor did your _______________ ________________ these _______________ _______________.” Deut. 8:4 WOW!!

16. Read Psalms 78. Consider ourselves today. Does God continue to bless us while we act like the Israelites?

Let’s now turn our attention to 1Kings 17. Here we meet Elijah. He is confronting King Ahab. 1 Kings 16:33 tells us the King "Ahab did more to provoke the lord God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel who were before him." Because of this evilness, Elijah declared a drought in the nation of Israel. Take note that God did not forsake Elijah, His faithful servant, at this time!!

17. "Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the _______________ _______________, which flows into the Jordan. And it will be that you shall _______________ from the brook, and I have _______________ the ravens to _______________ you there.” I Kings 17:2-4

Elijah did this for a time, relying on the brook and the ravens to bring him food in the morning and in the evening. But after awhile, the brook also dried up due to the lack of rain in the area. God still had a plan to provide for Elijah!
“Arise, go to _______________, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have _______________ a widow there to _______________ for you.” I Kings 17:9

19. Read Psalm 65. Especially note verse 11!
“You crown the year with Your _______________, and Your paths _______________ with _______________.” Psalm 65:11

20. “And my _______________ shall _______________ all you _______________ according to His _______________ in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philip. 4: 19

21. Let’s consider II Corinthians 9:6-15

a. To whom is this letter written?

b. In the verses preceding this passage, the Corinthians have promised a generous gift. Paul has sent men to help prepare this gift ahead of time. How does he tell us we should give in verse7?

c. Write verse 8. Circle the words all, sufficiency, abundance.

d. This is given for _______________ ________________ _______________.

e. Notice verse 10. God can supply and multiply the seed we have sown and increase our fruits just like those of Corinth.

f. “_______________ be to _______________ for His _______________ _______________!”

22. Read Luke 12:13-33. Let’s consider what our reaction should be to God’s abundant gifts.

a. “…for one’s ______________ does not consist in the abundance of the things he _______________.”

b. Remember the Rich fool who wanted to build bigger barns? Luke 12:16-20 “ So is he who lays up _______________ for himself, and is __________ _______________ toward _______________.”

c. What should our attitude be towards our food and clothing?

d. “…and your _______________ knows that you _______________ these things.” (vs. 30)

e. What should we seek?

f. “Do not fear, little flock, for it is your ______________ good _______________ to give you the kingdom.”

g. Where should our treasures be? (also see Matt. 6:20)

h. What else will be where we place our treasures?

God supplies all our needs. So far we have concentrated mainly on our physical needs. However, He also provided for our spiritual needs (You guessed it! BEFORE we needed them!!). Read Romans 5:12-21; I Peter 1:3-12; I Peter 3:18-22.

LESSON IN ACTION:
I would like to challenge each of us to make a list of all God’s provisions in our life. We will never be able to list them all but make a real effort. Spend time thanking God this week for those provisions. I would also like for you to find a way to share some part of your provisions with others this week as we are commanded to do!!
