You Shall Call Me, "My Father"
By Elizabeth Peak
Jeremiah 3:11-20 is a passage in which God is speaking to Jeremiah concerning the children of Israel. God pleads with the people to return to Him, to repent. God used terms like "return, backsliding children," and "turn not away from Me."
Some questions to think on from these verses are:
How can you be counted a holy seed, who are polluted?
How can you be tied to the people of God, who walk in the path of sinners?
How can you be taken to heaven, who are unholy within and unrighteous without?
The answer to all of the questions is the same—you cannot! The people could not be put among God's family unless they abandoned their idolatry and came back to God. If that happened then, they would be able to call God "My Father."
The same conditions exist today. The above questions can be asked of people today. The answers are the same. Unless a person is willing to repent of his sins, confess Jesus Christ as God's son, be baptized for the remission of sins, and walk faithfully, they cannot call God, "My Father."
Paul challenges the Thessalonians to "walk worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory." 1 Thessalonians 2:12 When we walk in a worthy manner, we will be children of God and can call Him "My Father."Questions
