The Royal Daughter Is Clothed in the Fear of the Lord

(All Scripture is taken from the NKJ Version unless stated.)

by Dena Ivie

"Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the LORD, she shall be praised."   (Proverbs 31:30)

We have considered many verses describing the royal daughter's wardrobe. Each part of this wardrobe is important, or it would not have been included in God's word. Let's think now about another very important item in the royal daughter's wardrobe.

If God is love and compassion, why does the royal daughter need to be clothed in the fear of the Lord? One fears a cruel and oppressive ruler. Does this describe God? These are questions one may ask concerning the fear of the Lord.

Certainly, God is not cruel or oppressive! There is no doubt about God's love and compassion, so we can also understand God is fair and just and will never change His rules. James 1:17, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning." Therefore, we can know with certainty what God says will never change!  In order to obey God's word, we must be clothed with the fear of the Lord. This is not the timidity or cowardice (5deilos) spoken of in 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear (deilos), but of power and of love and of a sound mind." The fear commanded of us comes from the Greek word having the idea of "taking hold of well or receiving well." So we must "take hold of God well" by understanding His power and His love for us. This type fear will help us obey the command in Ecclesiastes 12:13, "Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, for this is man's all."  Proper fear of the Lord will cause us to want to obey Proverbs 16:6, "... And by the fear of the LORD one departs from evil."

The proper fear (3eulabeia) of God involves respect, reverence and awe. When we do wrong (sin), we understand God has the right and the power to punish us. Proper respect and awe of God casts out the kind of fear (1phobos) that causes us to be terrified and scared.  "There is no fear (phobos) in love; but perfect love casts out fear (phobos), because fear involves torment. But he who fears (phobos)has not been made perfect in love." (1 John 4:18)

As royal daughters, let us resolve to be clothed in the fear of the Lord so we may obey Hebrews 12:28, "Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear."

Revelation 21:8, "But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death."
