Show Your Love by Submitting to Him

By Vickie Oliver

"Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything." (Ephesians 5:24)

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord."  (Colossians 3:18)

When I first saw this topic, I grabbed it. I chose it without even giving it a second thought and that is because this is a topic I can get on my 'soap box' about, far too often, probably. But then, it turned out to be very difficult.  I have been struggling with it for quite awhile. Now, I need to tell you why. My whole life has been about going to church with my parents, and even my grandparents, to serve the Lord. As a kid, you do not pay a lot of attention to what is going on around you in the 'adult' world, but it really does not take much to see how people treat each other. These are men and women who say they love each other.

After becoming an adult myself, I married the love of my life (we just celebrated our 36th anniversary together). He was not a Christian when we were dating, but he was looking for the truth. In studying with a very dear friend, he decided to become a Christian; that was twenty days before our wedding day. Who knew that nine years later he would begin preaching full-time? He is the most caring and loving man, I know. He is never first, God is. Then there's me.  He does not even have to tell me he loves me because I know; but he does. He is very thoughtful, patient, giving of self and time. He never sets himself above others. He always takes my thoughts and feelings into consideration. He has always taken very good care of our family. He serves the Lord in every aspect of his life. Twenty nine years into our marriage, he also became an Elder of the church. Thank you God for being my anchor! This man that You gave me lives for You and loves me.

If we could clone my husband, I guarantee there would never be another woman who would have any problem letting her husband be the head of their house. Okay, I know we cannot do that; and you are probably thinking that your husband is pretty good too.  I hope he is.

All we have to do is read our Bible and look at Christ to see how we are to treat others. How did He treat others that were subject to HIM? We, the church, are in subjection to Christ as He was in subjection to the Father.

Today some might say it is not politically correct to 'honor and obey' or be in subjection to a mere man, but Romans says "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth;" . . .(Romans 1:16a KJV)

If you are living your life by the gospel of Christ, DON'T BE ASHAMED to do what Christ says is right. Do it with BOLDNESS! Do it because the LORD said to!

QUESTIONS:

1. "Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in __________." Ephesians 5:24 NKJV

2. "Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is ________ in the Lord." Colossians 3:18 NKJV

3. Discussion Question: Why is it fitting in the Lord for a woman to submit to her husband? What does the phrase, "fitting in the Lord" mean?

4. Is it important how we treat each other when we are out in public? I know of one young lady who says she will never marry and her "soapbox" is concerning the way men and women treat each after they are married. Discuss.

5. Is it important how we treat each other behind closed doors? Discuss.

6. Is it important how we treat each other in front of our children? Discuss.

7. What do you teach your children when you submit to your husband? Discuss.

Note: When a woman submits to her husband, she is by this very act also submitting to God, or as one verse says:"to the righteousness of God".  Please take God's general commands concerning submission that you will read in the following verses and apply them to woman's duty to submit to her husband:

8. "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God." Romans 10:3 NKJV

Coordinate this verse with:

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord." Colossians 3:18 NKJV

9. " ...Submitting to one another in the fear of God." Ephesians 5:21 NKJV

Coordinate this verse with:

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord." Colossians 3:18 NKJV

10. "Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." James 4:7 NKJV

Coordinate this verse with:

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord." Colossians 3:18 NKJV
