OBC LADIES 4-21-08 Members of One Another By Ruby Ramsey
"For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another." (Romans 12:4-5)
God, in His unique wisdom, made the church to be the body of believers, whose head is Jesus Christ. We, then, are members of that body. And just as we are members of our earthly families, we are members of God's heavenly or spiritual family. Just like we love and care for the members of our earthly family, it is important for us to love all the members of our spiritual family, too.
I Corinthians 12:12-27 12 For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free—and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. 14 For in fact the body is not one member but many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I am not of the body,” is it therefore not of the body? 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? 18 But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body just as He pleased. 19 And if they were all one member, where would the body be? 20 But now indeed there are many members, yet one body. 21 And the eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you”; nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary. 23 And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our unpresentable parts have greater modesty, 24 but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, 25 that there should be no schism in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. 26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.
God has given each of us talents, but we do not all have the same talents. However, God expects us to use the talents He has given to us to bring glory and honor to Him. Some of us sing better than others. Some of us are better teachers than others. One, though, is no better than the other for both are needed. And if we all appreciate each other, we will get along just fine; and the church is likely to attract others. We are all members of the one body. Because we are all members of the Body of Christ, we are all members of one another. We are part of each other because we are part of the body. No one is more important than the other. As verse 18 above says, "God has set the members, each one of them in the body just as He pleased." God determines what our function is in the body. Therefore, we should all be pleased about how God placed us in the body.
Questions: 1. Do you know what your function is in the body, and do you do it gladly?
2. What happens if those in the body do not co-operate and get along?
3. Romans 6:13 -- "And do not present your ___________ as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present ______________ to God as being ______________ from the _______________ and your ___________ as instruments of _____________ to God." [NKJV]
4. Ephesians 4:25 -- "Therefore, putting away ________________, "let each one of ___________ _________ __________ with his _________, for we are _______ of________ _________." [NKJV]
5. Ephesians 5:30 -- "For we are _______________ of His body, of His __________ and of His ___________" [NKJV]
6. Are some members of the body more important to God than others? If you think so, who? And why? 7. How do you get into the Body of Christ?
8. Do you take your part in the body as God has set you, and function to the best of your ability?
9. In your own physical body, do you think one part is more important than another? If so, which one and why do you think that?
10. If we are "members of one another," how should we care for one another?
