God's Children Shine as Lights

By Ruby Ramsey

"Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world," (Philippians 2:14-15)

I love these verses! I taught third and fourth grade Bible classes for many years. This is a verse I had each class memorize and they loved it.

The children thought it was great to think of themselves as lights that would shine so everyone could see them. They were like stars shining brightly in the dark world of sin. You cannot miss seeing the stars at night. I told them people would not miss seeing Children of God, because they stand out, they shine; they glow with the goodness of God.

"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)

This verse tells us that when we do good works (feeding and clothing the poor, comforting the brokenhearted, teaching the lost, etc.) people will see us doing these things and know we are emissaries of God. Hopefully they will glorify and thank Him. If we don't do anything, we are hiding our lights under a basket and no one can see it.

"For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord." (Ephesians 5:8-10)

We cannot shine if we have dirt (sin) in us. I read that one thing housewives forget to clean is the dust off the light bulbs in the house. (Did you ever look how much dust your light bulbs have on them?) We would all have much brighter rooms if we would dust our light bulbs. The same thing applies to our lives. Unless we clean all the dirt, grime
and sin from our life, we don't shine very bright, if at all.

God's Word provides our light. "Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."  ( Psalm 119:105)

Let us make sure our lights shine so that everyone we come in contact with will know that we are Children of God, just by the way we shine (behave, act).

Shine on!
